I recently reread Kevin Kelly’s post 1,000 true fans. It is a MUST READ if you are a content creator, small business owner, or someone trying to maintain a fan base or have any followers (make money). Kelly originally wrote this post in 2008, but it has been updated and updated over the years. Talked to the likes of Tim Ferriss and others.
The concept is simple.
You don’t need millions to be a successful creator. You don’t need millions of dollars or millions of customers, millions of customers or millions of fans. To earn a living as a craftsman, photographer, musician, designer, author, animator, app manufacturer, entrepreneur or inventor, you only need thousands of real fans.
Kelly says that A real fan will buy anything you make. When you’re in a band, they travel the country to see you play. If you’re a writer, read every new book or blog post you write. These are die-hard fans, and it is around them that you should build your business.
A thousand customers are much more feasible than a million fans. Millions of paying fans are not a realistic goal, especially if you’re just starting out. But a thousand fans are feasible.
He is absolutely right. 1,000 fans IS manufacturable. And because 1,000 real fans are feasible, it’s more valuable and sustainable than 1,000,000 fans. I’d rather have 1,000 die-hard fans than spend the rest of my life shooting for the unrealistic goal of competing with a big corporation’s fan base.
Do the math and you will see how valuable Kelly’s concept can be. Remember that 1,000, as he says, is not an absolute number. You could shoot for 500 fans or 2,000 or 3,000. Either way, these tastier numbers of die-hard fans can prop up your business.
If you can make an average of $ 100 a year with each fan, then You only need 1,000 of these to make $ 100,000 a year.
The math behind it
Think about it … He breaks it down for different numbers of both fans and how much you make on average per fan.
If you make an average of $ 50 a year with each fan, you need 2,000 fans to make $ 100,000 a year. Of course, you can also go in the opposite direction. If you make an average of $ 200 a year with each fan, it’s only 500 fans to make $ 100,000 a year.
Making a living as a content creator or small business owner is a lot more doable than you think – as long as you have a die-hard following.
Kelly says: “the big corporations, the middlemen, the commercial producers are all inadequately equipped and unsuitable to get in touch with these thousand true fans.“Large companies cannot connect to their fans on a peer-to-peer basis like a single content creator. Here your value increases compared to the big ones looking for millions. You don’t need millions. You don’t want millions. You want to satisfy your 1,000 true fans.
The niche audience is interested in what you have to offer uniquely. They like the sound of your music, the way you write, your takes, or the art you create. They are a small but nice group. You can build a direct relationship with 1,000 real fans to improve the experience for you and the fans.

AND, can you find 1,000 real fans in this niche who follow you and consume everything you produce? That is the goal.
It’s more achievable than you think. I’m not quite there yet, but I’m on my way. My project is a sideline that could one day become something important. Even if it is a minor matter, just think of Kelly’s concept in this context.
To make $ 20,000 a year with a side business with 200 fans, you’d only need to make an average of $ 100 a year. Whatever your goal, it’s probably more doable than you think. Run the numbers and find out.
